FSW is the key to big extrusion dimensions

Friction Stir Welding

Sapa is a world-leading supplier of panels made with FSW (Friction Stir Welded) extrusions. FSW is a key technology that enables homogenous joining which is virtually free of heat distortion.

The main advantage of FSW is that it allows the production of panels to large dimensions: at Sapa, we have the capability of manufacturing panels up to 26 metres long and 3.5 metres wide.

FSW uses a rotary dowel to heat aluminium to a plastic state at 480ºC, far below the 660ºC melting temperature. The panels are joined without any filling material, which means that the composition of the weld will be virtually the same as the surrounding material. As a result, a joint with high strength and a clean finish is produced straight from the welding process.

Advantages of FSW

  • Allows big, homogenous extrusion-based panels
  • Produces completed void-free tight joints with high strength
  • Minimal heat influence
