XrossIT -a computer holder |
Götessons presented XrossIT at this year’s Furniture Fair. It is a patent pending computer holder which can be easily converted to suit both standing and horizontal CPU’s as well as portable computers. The solution is based entirely on aluminium profiles.
- Aluminium profiles are used in several of our products, says Tomas Svensson, who is responsible for product development, production and purchasing at Götessons Industri AB in Dalstorp.
- We started our co-operation with Sapa three years ago, continues Tomas. The first job was about a flat screen arm. Gradually, the project grew to include an entire system, which has the name Linjé. Now we offer a complete solution which consists of a CPU holder, a keyboard arm and a flat screen arm. All elements use the same base structure. This co-operation gave us valuable knowledge and contacts, and we thought that we could use more of it.
This is how the idea was born
For several years, Tomas wondered how he could solve one of the problems of the purchasers in big companies.
- The problem is that when you have to equip a great number of working places, it is often difficult for the purchaser to determine how many people work on portable computers and how many on stationary ones. This is why many working places have a CPU holder that is not used because the wrong model was bought.
After many nights of thinking, the basic idea was born. Tomas made a preliminary 3D model and contacted Sapa.
Tight co-operation
- We worked tight together and Sapa’s technicians really contributed with solutions when it came to construction details as well as with their competence in profiles. I have to say that they are very good to work with. It works just great. Although we are a relatively small company, we always feel welcome with our projects, says the satisfied Tomas.
The construction
When XrossIT is used for standing CPU’s, a wide profile forms the side support. For horizontal CPU’s, the same profile is used as the surface on which the computer lies, instead. Standing CPU’s are supported on two profiles. The same profiles form the holder’s back edge, instead, when it is used for a horizontal CPU or a portable computer. The holder also has an integrated telescopic function.

The holder is fastened to a rail and it can be adjusted by turning and sliding.
- In order to switch between these two versions you only need an Allen key and a few simple operations. All parts are used and nothing has to be thrown away. This environmental thinking becomes more and more important. The product idea is based on recycling and aluminium is a sustainable material that can be reused, says Tomas.
High design value
- It is also a product with a high design value. The big profile is both wide (360 mm) and complex. Other players, whom I had contacted before, cannot even make such a wide profile. Sapa is able to extrude it and meet our high surface quality requirements, adds Tomas and he concludes with the following:
- In the laptop position we have actually one more important argument. Aluminium dissipates heat and it contributes to extending the lifetime of the computer.
