Aluminium is a relatively new and unique material. It is available in almost inexhaustible quantities because about 8% of the Earth’s crust is made up of aluminium compounds in various forms; bauxite is the most widely used mineral for producing aluminium. The metal offers a combination of attractive benefits: it is light but very stable; it is corrosion resistant, eco-friendly and non-toxic; it is outstandingly malleable and ductile and can be easily shaped and processed.

And when it comes to recycling, too, aluminium’s benefits come to the fore. This is because the metal can be re-used time and time again without any deterioration whatsoever in its properties and recycling only requires 5% of the energy that is required to produce it from bauxite in the first place – via conversion to aluminium oxide and subsequent electrolysis.

Today, about 50% of all Sapa products are made from recycled aluminium.
