Sapa Mass Transportation seals contract with Alstom Transportation for Stuttgart S-Bahn program.

Deutsche Bahn Regio AG has placed an order totalling €452 million with Alstom and Bombardier for 83 new regional EMU trains. Alstom’s share of this contract is €112 million. The contract includes an option for up to 83 additional units. Delivery of the trains is scheduled between February and December 2012.
The car bodies being built by Alstom, Sapa Mass Transportation recently received the order from Alstom Transportation. The scope of supply involves structural extrusions as well as Friction Stir Welded (FSW) panels. The aluminium components are to be delivered to Alstom’s Salzgitter site in Germany. Sapa's plant in Finspång, Sweden, will be responsible for supplying the FSW floors and side panels including machining. Start of production is December 2009. The value for Sapa is a multi million Euro contract over two year’s time. Sapa was granted the order due to our quality standards, the good relationship we have with our customer and the ongoing belief of Alstom in our FSW technology, hence incorporating it in this new project.
The trains will serve the six lines of the Stuttgart city and suburban rail network, carrying around 330,000 passengers every day. Designed in close cooperation with Stuttgart’s urban rail operator, the trains will each comprise 4 cars with a carrying capacity of up to 494 passengers per train. The maximum speed of 140 km/h and the acceleration and braking performance of the electrical multiple units will help to increase service frequency. Eco-friendly technologies have also been brought on board, with regenerative brakes that allow braking energy to be recovered and fed back into the electric power network. The energy consumption of the new trains will be about 40% less than the recent vehicles. Similarly, heat released by components such as the transformer and converter will be used to heat the cars, which will generate significant cost savings.
Sapa Mass Transportation has been working with Alstom Transportation for over 10 years and has delivered to several of their projects utilizing our competences in extrusion and FSW. As part of our strategy, we have put significant design resources and know-how towards Alstom over the years, the result of which has been substantial increase of solutions supplied to their rolling stock products.
