Sapa RC Profiles nv/sa, Lichtervelde

In 1949, Remi Claeys started the production of welded steel tubes for his bicycle factory Superia. During the economic boom in Belgium, the company is growing rapidly.

1957

First extrusion press. Further investments follow each other in rapid succession:

  • casting aluminium billets,
  • machines for aluminium tubes, 
  • a cold rolling mill for the production of aluminium strip.

1979

Thanks to the success of the aluminium, the steel production did not survive and the company became the property of the Flemish government (GIMV)

1991

  • A group of investors, under the direction of the industrial Aimé Desimpel, takes over the activities and places them in a new corporate structure: extrusion (profiles), pipes (welded tubes), RC system (architectural systems).
  • The ambitions of the new owners lead to large investments and acquisitions, through which Remi Claeys Aluminium grows up to an international group.
  • A series of important events happen during this period, among other things, the installation of a new 5500T press and the modernisation of the 2200T press.

1998

Going public of Remi Claeys Aluminium Group on the Brussels Stock Exchange, later Euronext.

2003

Sapa acquires the majority of the shares of the family Desimpel.

2004

  • Introduction of the name Sapa RC Profiles NV/SA for the extrusion activities. Welded Tubes (Alutubes) keeps the name Remi Claeys Aluminium NV.
  • The building activities RC System is today the central hub of the international Sapa Building Systems. The 5500T press is upgraded to 6500T.

2012

Last extrusion on the 2200T press and move of the 26-metre CNC machine from Ghlin to Lichtervelde. The Remelt in Ghlin is upgraded from 45kT/year to 75kT/year output.

2013

Norsk Hydro and Orkla sign the 50/50 Joint Venture between Hydro and Sapa. 1/9/2013 : foundation of the Joint-Venture company Sapa;
