Sapa is side-impact Star at UK Roads Crash Demonstration Day at MIRA

Thursday 30th June 2011 saw the first public crash demonstrations to be held within the U.K. since 2009. The event was organised by UK Roads Ltd and held in association with MIRA, at their world renowned HAVOC test facility in Leicestershire.

The main purpose of the event was to compare the damage sustained by the side impact of a vehicle, into a non-passively safe 12m steel lighting column, with a 15m NE3 Passively Safe column from Sapa. A Ford Fiesta was crashed at 35kph sideways into a passively safe 15m lighting column provided by Sapa. The column was mounted in a Retention Socket supplied and installed by NAL.Despite the low speed and orientation of the impact, the 15m NE3 Passively Safe column from Sapa performed perfectly, shearing away as it is designed to do, causing very little damage or intrusion to the side of the car (and significantly less than that caused by the traditional steel column in the first demonstration). See the movie below for the result:

A Vauxhall Astra was crashed at 70kph into a Sapa lighting column (Classification 70:NE:3). The column is of  a shear off construction mounted in a two part base plate. The lighting assembly was installed directly with steel wired armoured cables and an above ground electrical disconnection system, The Safety Isolation System (SIS Solo Pillar), provided by NAL Ltd. The column performed as anticipated and there was no intrusion into the passenger compartment as a result of the collision.

A Peugeot 306 was crashed at 35kph into a 15m Sapa passively safe lighting column (100:NE:3), complete with post-top lantern. The assembly was also fitted with an energised circuit (armoured cabling in and out) and a SIS Solo (Pillar) system provided by NAL to demonstrate successful disconnection/interruption of the supply using this system. This demonstration was an example of how well NE products perform, even in low-speed impacts.

A Citroen ZX was crashed at 70kph into a 114mm diameter Sapa traffic signal pole (Classification 70:NE:2). The pole supported 3 signal heads and was mounted in a retention socket provided by NAL. The assembly was installed directly with steel wired armoured cables in and out and an above ground electrical disconnection system, The Safety Isolation System (SIS Quad), provided by NAL Ltd. The column performed as anticipated and there was no intrusion into the passenger compartment as a result of the collision.
