Cressona Company History

The Cressona Operation is part of the Sapa Extrusions business unit and is the largest common alloy extrusion facility in North America.  Situated on 100 acres of land, the combined area of the 13 buildings on the plant side provides approximately 34.5 acres (1.5 million square feet) under roof!

The Cressona facility was designed and constructed during World War II for the U.S. Government and leased to the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) for the manufacture of aluminum alloy, extruded shapes and tubing.  Operated for the U.S. Government from April 1943 to October 1944, the plant was later utilized by the Defense Department for the reclamation of returned ordnance material. Alcoa purchased the plant and operated it between October 1946 and May 1977.  The plant was closed between May 1977 and May 1979.

On May 1, 1979, a group of investors and experienced industry managers finalized an agreement to purchase the former Alcoa plant.  The Cressona Aluminum Company was established on May 2, 1979, with an official reopening of the plant.  In July of 1979, less  than 75 days after the plant was purchased, the new company cast its first metal, began press operations, and shipped its first extruded product.

In March 1996, the Cressona Aluminum Company was acquired by Alumax Inc.  The Cressona Operation became a manufacturing operation of the newly-restructured Alumax Extrusions, Inc.  The headquarters of a key business unit commercial group was also established in a refurbished building at this location.  In July 1998, Alcoa purchased Alumax Inc. and the Cressona Operation became part of Alcoa again.

On June 8, 2007 a new chapter of aluminum history was written.  Two leading manufacturers of aluminum extrusions, Sapa and Alcoa, were combined to form a joint venture company, Sapa AB, the world’s largest supplier of aluminum profiles.

Today, the dedication and work ethic of the Cressona employees continue as part of the Sapa family. Their pursuit of excellence is contributing to Sapa’s Vision to be the best aluminum company in the world.
