Spanish Fork Company History
The Spanish Fork Operation building was originally built by Kirby Manufacturing. It sat idle for a number of years until it was purchased by the Cressona Aluminum Company in 1991. Not only was the building large enough to accommodate an extrusion operation, but it was located on 40 acres offering plenty of room for future expansion. Acquisition of this new facility enabled Cressona Aluminum to better service its West Coast customers.
At the time it was acquired by Alumax Inc. in January of 1996, Cressona Aluminum had grown to be the largest privately-held extrusion company in the world. In July of 1998, Alumax was acquired by Alcoa. On June 8, 2007 a new chapter of aluminum history was written. Two leading manufacturers of aluminum extrusions, Sapa and Alcoa, were combined to form a joint venture company, Sapa AB, the world’s largest supplier of aluminum profiles. The Spanish Fork facility is now operated under Sapa Extrusions.
Spanish Fork’s extrusion operations began in 1992 with a single 3000-ton Ube press. In 1995, the installation of a 4250-ton Sutton press and a cast house were completed. During the initial year of production, shipping volume was 40 million pounds of finished product. This volume grew to 60 million pounds in 1996, exceeded 80 million pounds in 1998 and more than 90 Million in 2006. The current building encompasses more than 300,000 square feet of manufacturing, office and warehouse space.
The Spanish Fork cast house has the capability to cast 100% of all our specialty alloys and nearly all our total volume. In our cast house, our process control has given us an advantage of consistency and the ability to trouble shoot and solve even difficult customer needs which has enabled us to become one of the premier machining stock producers in North America. 9 and 14 inch logs are cast and the log inventory is generally used for our own customer orders rather than for sale to other manufacturers.
Both extrusion presses are oil hydraulic; they extrude an average of 200,000 pounds per day. Our basic business is the manufacture and fabrication of aluminum extruded shapes, including various types of solid and hollow extruded shapes manufactured to customer specifications. The customer base is diverse — automotive, truck trailers, electronics, original equipment manufacturers and Service Centers. Product is sold either directly or through our warehouse.
Today, the dedication and work ethic of the Spanish Fork employees continue as part of the Sapa family. Their pursuit of excellence is contributing to Sapa’s Vision to be the best aluminum company in the world.
