Some of our most widely used alloys, both casting and wrought alloys, include:
•2024 aluminum alloy. This alloy contains copper and magnesium. It is commonly used in aircraft fuselage, wings, ribs and other structural components or fittings that demand stiffness, good strength and fatigue resistance.
•3003 aluminum alloy. One of the most commonly used non-heat treatable alloys; it contains manganese and a tiny percentage of copper. 3003 alloy is found in everything from cooking utensils and ice cube trays to garage doors and fuel tanks. It’s also highly resistant to chemical attack and is commonly used for heat exchangers and condensers involving chemicals.
•5052 aluminum alloy. 5052 is one of the stronger, non-heat-treatable alloys. It’s not the best choice for extensive machining operations, but has high fatigue strength making it an excellent option for structures that need to withstand excessive vibrations. Alloy 5052 is commonly used in sheet, plate and tube form.
•6061 aluminum alloy. This alloy contains magnesium and silicon, and is used extensively as a construction material, most commonly for aircraft and automotive components, and in the construction of yachts, motorcycles, bicycle frames, camera lenses, fishing reels, electrical fittings, couplings and valves.
•6061-T6 aluminum alloy. This alloy is heat-treated and artificially aged for structural strength and toughness. It is widely used in aircraft, boat and watercraft construction.
•6063 aluminum alloy. This popular magnesium and silicon alloy is in the heat treatable category. It has a finer grain structure than 6061 and will provide the best cosmetic appearance after anodizing. It is highly corrosion resistance with good workability and weldability. Common uses include cylinder tubing, electrical bus conductor, and architectural applications.
•7075 aluminum alloy. This is a cold-wrought alloy. It is the strongest of the alloys, or as strong as some lower-grade steel products, but lighter in weight. It is ideal for aerospace, defense and consumer products where strength, corrosion resistance and high stress-reduction capabilities are important, such as in missile parts, rock-climbing equipment, hang glider airframes and bike frames.
