Finspång steps up safety

Safety is to be taken to an even higher level. Everyone - both employees and visitors – shall feel safe when being in the Finspång plant!

Some unnecessary accidents at Sapa Profiles in Finspång, at the start of the year triggered a campaign that aims to take each individual employee's safety commitment to a higher level. "The aim is to raise all employees' awareness and interest in safety matters," says Bo Carlsson, Operations Director in Finspång. 

"Everyone must take their responsibility for safety in the workplace. No employee should ever feel unsafe at work. Safety is our number one priority. The campaign theme is 'Our vision is zero injuries and accidents – your contribution counts!"

Investing in soft values

Accidents and incidents are usually a consequence of somebody's actions when they failed to follow health and safety rules and procedures. It doesn't matter how much money is invested in building safety into the machines if the correct procedures are not followed.

"Nobody must ever get injured at work. In the past two years, we have invested heavily in making the presses in Finspång safer," says Stig Östlund, EHS manager at Sapa Sweden. "Now we're investing in our employees. In recent years we have definitely reduced the severity of the accidents that do occur, but we can't stop there. Our goal is zero injuries and accidents. We will hold a three-day safety course for all managers and safety representatives. People are told to think before they act, but not everybody has fully taken this attitude on board. Sapa has a safety policy, and we will not accept any exceptions to this policy."

No cutting corners

It is vitally important that everybody uses the safety equipment and follows the instructions provided. Production engineer Jonny Andersson guides me round the factory and takes pictures. He recalls how ten years ago he, for one, had a completely different attitude to safety.

"Back then wearing goggles and a helmet was considered a bit silly, but now it's seen as perfectly natural. If someone forgets to use their safety equipment, everybody points it out. Protective equipment is used as a matter of course, and nobody intentionally cuts corners. That's good progress."

Work is under way

Improvement groups will be set up to work on attitudes and responsible behaviour.

"We want everybody to realise that their commitment is crucial. It's about creating an environment where all employees actively take responsibility for their own and others' safety," explains Bo. "We want to create a safe culture, but it takes time to change attitudes and get people involved."
